Hotel Kölner Hof

Wikipedia
Hotel Kölner Hof was a hotel in Frankfurt near the main train station, that proudly advertised itself as being the “Only Jew-Free Hotel” in the city of Frankfurt am Main. Jews were forbidden to stay at this hotel from 1895.

Herman Laass, born 1866, was the owner of the hotel and restaurant as of 1892 and took great pride that Jews were excluded. He produced not only antisemitic postcards but also labels. Among supporters of the anti-Semitic movement, Laass is considered a “hero” in Frankfurt, because they referred to Frankfurt as “New Jerusalem on the Franconian Jordan” due to its comparatively high proportion of Jewish citizens. Posters inside the hotel state that “Jewish guest are prohibited”; Beer is served in mugs marked “Don’t buy from Jews.”

Laass was not only a hotel owner but also a local politician and in 1903 was Reichstag candidate of the Reform Party for Frankfurt. He became a member of the NSDAP (the Nazi Party) in 1931.

He died in 1936.

In this postcard you can see that a Jew, a travelling salesman, was kicked out of the hotel, together with his suitcase, he was kicked towards the train station with the idea that they should leave Frankfurt.
