Édouard Herzig


Herzig was born in 23 December 1860, in Neuchâtel, Switzerland and died on October 3rd 1926 in Algiers, Algeria.
He began his education for teaching, attending courses at the teacher training school in Neuchâtel. However, his yearning for independence and adventure led him to Marseille, where he set sail for Algeria in 1883 at the age of 23. He established himself in Kabylia, a mountainous region of Algeria. Later, upon relocating to Algiers, he pursued studies at the School of Fine Arts.

Herzig is renowned as a painter and illustrator, recognized for his intricate arabesque patterns created during his time in Algeria.
