Sydney Carter

Carter was born in 1874, in Enfield, Middlesex, England and dies in 1945.
Known for landscapes and townscape paintings (trees), murals, book illustrations.
Carter received a scholarship to study at the Royal College of Art. In 1923 he went to South Africa and was elected Vice President of Orange Free State Society of Arts and Crafts in the Orange Free State.
He eventually travelled to Johannesburg and in 1927 was became a staff member of Witwatersrand Tech College Art School.

Carter studied art at:

  • 1889 - 1890 Buckhurst Hill Art School.
  • 1890 - 1895 Walthamstow School of Art (Art Teachers Certificate).
  • 1895 - 1899 Royal College of Art, London; won several medals and awards.
